Access to work
What is "Access to work"?
The UK’s Access to Work Scheme is a government initiative designed to help people with disabilities or health conditions, including ADHD, gain and retain employment by providing financial and practical support. The scheme offers grants to cover costs related to workplace adjustments that an employer may not ordinarily fund. This can include specialised equipment (such as iPads needed to be more efficient), support workers (such as Virtual Assistants or Coaches), mental health support, or travel assistance if public transport is challenging.
To be eligible, applicants must be employed, self-employed, or about to start work, and the support offered is tailored to meet individual needs. The scheme aims to make workplaces more accessible, ensuring that disabilities or health conditions don’t hinder employment opportunities and productivity.
How do I apply?
To apply to the UK’s Access to Work scheme, an individual can follow these steps:
Check Eligibility: Confirm that you have a disability or health condition that affects your ability to work and that you are employed, self-employed, or about to start work.
Complete the Application: You can apply online through the Access to Work website or by calling their helpline. You'll need to provide personal information, details about your job, and explain how your condition impacts your work.
Assessment: If eligible, an Access to Work advisor will contact you to discuss what you may need. They may arrange a workplace assessment to identify necessary adjustments or support.
Receive Support Plan: Based on the assessment, a support plan with recommended adjustments or services will be created, outlining the financial support available. Approval and Funding: If approved, Access to Work will cover eligible expenses for the agreed adjustments, such as equipment, travel costs, or me!
